Here is a list of software that I use. Some of these are open source (free) some are not. Please feel free to have a look and try them out for yourself.
Here is a little application for resizing jpg image files. The reason I like this one so much is because after you install it, you never have to start the application again. It is always available in the right click menu. So find the file or files that you want to resize and highlight them and right click. If it is an image than can be resize by this software then Resize-O-Matic will appear in the menu. With some basic settings, click OK and your are done.
I love this one.

This software is used for copying or ripping DVD movies to your hard drive. If you have Windows Media Center then you can rip all of your movie to a hard drive (VOB files) and then setup media center to play those movies from the menu system. It works very well and is great for kids. No scratched or missing discs. Plus you can borrow and make a perfect copy. Plus it also allows you remove the FBI warnings and menus, so when you click on play it starts right now, not after 10 minues of previews.
This is a great application and I use it all of the time. This software is illegal and may be difficult to download, good luck.
